Reliving this fabulous moment from the Friends of the Choir evensong last weekend. Thomas Tallis’ extraordinary 40-part motet “Spem in alium” was the introit. We think that this is the first time it has been sung liturgically in Selwyn chapel though there was a performance of it in the hall in 1985. Iconic for musicians for centuries, it entered the wider public consciousness when it featured in the film “Fifty Shades of Grey” about 10 years ago. | The Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge

Experience SPEM IN ALIUM, Thomas Tallis’ legendary 40 part motet, brought to life by ALERON and Collegium Vocale Manila, under the direction of Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng. This one night only event is both a performance and a lecture, offering rare insight into the different textures and sonorities of some of choral music's greatest masterpieces. 📅 February 28, 2026, 8:00 PM, Saturday 📍 Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University Buy your tickets

We did it again! All 40 voices of Tallis' monumental SPEM IN ALIUM, last Friday midnight at St. Mariä Himmelfahrtskirche Köln as part of Kölner Philharmonie's FELIX! festival, performed just by myself and Ulfried Staber, recorded and looped into 16 loudspeakers by Markus Wallner. Next time already in one month, Sept. 17th at Forum Alte Musik Zürich! Thanks for the video footage to our producer / musical assistant Tore Denys - I guess at that stage of the evening, you didn't have much else to do
